Professional background
Maria Chazapis is a consultant anaesthetist at UCLH, where she specialises in trauma and orthopaedics anaesthesia, obstetric anaesthesia, bariatric anaesthesia and ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia.
Maria studied at the University of Cambridge, where she qualified with an MA in Medical Sciences. She completed her MBBS medical degree at Imperial College London School of Medicine.
Maria trained in anaesthetics in the North Central London School of Anaesthesia, and was awarded the fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA) in 2011. She then completed an MSc in Regional Anaesthesia from the University of East Anglia, and is an expert Regional Anaesthetist. She also holds the European Diploma of Regional Anaesthesia (EDRA).
Research interests
Maria's main research interests are finding ways to improve the care of patients undergoing surgery and in particular improving patients' experience of surgery. She feels it is a privilege to be part of a patient’s journey and she aims to give the patient the best experience possible. She spent many years as a research fellow working in the Surgical Outcomes Research Centre of University College London Hospitals, investigating patient centred metrics and outcomes with perioperative care. She also spent a year as a prestigious Darzi Fellow, helping set up the national Royal College of Anaesthetists' Perioperative Quality Improvement Project (PQIP).
