What is an endoscopy procedure?
Endoscopy is a technique where an instrument called an endoscope - a long, thin, flexible tube with a camera and light at one end - is inserted through the mouth into the stomach (gastroscopy) to look at the oesophagus (food pipe), stomach and parts of the small intestine. Alternatively, it can be inserted through the bottom and into the large bowel (colonoscopy).
An endoscopy can be used as a diagnostic procedure to investigate symptoms, to take samples of tissue (a biopsy) or to carry out therapeutic procedures.
We offer endoscopy, gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy privately at UCLH.
