“I had just come out of the shower one morning when I collapsed in my bedroom without warning. My family found me there, and I was sent by ambulance, initially to a different hospital, where I was diagnosed with an arteriovenous malformation (AVM). I was operated on immediately, which successfully controlled the bleeding.

I was due to have follow-up surgery there, but I then acquired a bone infection and had to postpone the surgery while I took a course of antibiotics for six weeks. Unfortunately, the hospital I was in had a cyberattack, and they began to cancel non-emergency operations.

I didn’t want to delay my surgery any longer, so I spoke to my wife, who discovered that her private health insurance would cover this kind of operation.

Ms. Mary Murphy was recommended to us as a neurosurgeon who specialised in my condition, and we were directed to UCLH Private Healthcare by our insurance company.

Ms Murphy was absolutely fantastic. She thoroughly explained the procedure to me, including going through all the options that I could potentially have had as an alternative. She made sure I understood the risks and the benefits of the surgery, and I felt really comfortable in her care. I would say she was professional yet approachable.

The surgery involved the removal of my AVM and the insertion of a cranial plate, which was very successful.

I then had to stay in the Bloomsbury Ward at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery for a week after my operation. I can’t think of any better word to describe my care than “awesome.” The staff were outstanding. They were friendly, polite, and professional, and they were fantastic at keeping my wife fully informed about my progress while I recovered. I also have to say that the quality of the food was excellent!

Since the surgery I have a new appreciation for life. I put more emphasis on family time and really appreciate the small moments and activities like family outings. Returning to work on a phased basis has also helped me ease myself back into real life again.

I would highly recommend UCLH Private Healthcare to anyone that needs neurological treatment. The professionalism, compassion, and high standards that I saw throughout my care were outstanding.”
