Professional background

Dr Mohammad Mahmud is a consultant neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Queen Square, London. He holds a specialist interest in vestibular disorders, dizziness, vertigo, balance medicine, and eye movements and is one of the leading vestibular neurologists in the UK.

Dr Mahmud completed his medical degree and bachelor of sciences at Imperial College London in 2011, receiving degree award distinctions. He subsequently completed a PhD in vestibular neuroscience at Imperial College London, alongside a postgraduate diploma in learning and teaching. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Member of the Royal College of Physicians, and a Member of the Association of British Neurologists (ABN).

At the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Dr Mahmud runs general neurology, neuro-otology, and TIA clinics and sees patients with acute neurology presentations. His clinical practice covers the full range of vestibular and balance disorders, including benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Ménière's disease, vestibular neuritis, labyrinthitis, vestibular migraine, persistent postural perceptual dizziness (PPPD), bilateral vestibulopathy, superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD), perilymph fistula, and mal de débarquement syndrome. He also has extensive experience in dizziness, imbalance, falls, collapses, light-headedness, and pre-syncope.

Dr Mahmud recognises that vestibular and balance disturbance frequently occurs in the context of neurological conditions, and he has particular expertise in managing these symptoms in patients with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and atypical Parkinsonian disorders, and stroke, where symptom control and neurorehabilitation are central to care.

Dr Mahmud is a programme director for Clinical Neurology & Brain Sciences iBSc and course director of the Clinical Neurology Masters at UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, where he leads curriculum development and medical education. His research spans vestibular neuroscience, neuroimaging, postural balance, traumatic brain injury, and brain fog, with publications in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Neurology, Brain Connectivity, and Frontiers in Human Neuroscience.

Research interests

Dr Mahmud has a specialist interest in the neurology of eye movements and sees patients experiencing oscillopsia, double vision, diplopia, and nystagmus, including where these arise as part of an underlying neurological or vestibular condition.
