Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition linked with a loss of dopamine in the brain. Symptoms may include:

  • Tremor

  • Slowness of movement

  • Stiffness

  • Walking and balance problems

Parkinson-plus disorders describe conditions that resemble Parkinson’s disease but may have different underlying causes. These include conditions such as:

  • Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP)

  • Multiple system atrophy (MSA)

  • Corticobasal syndrome (CBS)

These rarer disorders can be challenging to diagnose and are frequently mistaken for Parkinson’s disease.

The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Queen Square is one of the UK’s most advanced centres for diagnosing and managing Parkinson’s disease and Parkinson-plus disorders.

Whether you are worried about early symptoms, seeking a diagnosis, looking for a second opinion, or exploring advanced treatment options, our specialists provide world-class expertise and, if required, compassionate, long-term care.

When to seek specialist assessment

Although the symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease could be a sign of a number of problems, or even just ageing, if you are concerned you may wish to book an appointment with one of our consultants.

Early, accurate assessment by a movement disorder specialist and prompt commencement of treatment will give you the best chance of minimising your Parkinson’s disease symptoms.

Comprehensive diagnostic pathways

Your diagnosis will begin with an in-depth consultation and neurological examination. Our consultants are specialists in movement disorders and among the best placed in the world to diagnose your condition.

Parkinson’s disease does not (yet) have any specific diagnostic markers, which is where your specialist consultant’s expertise becomes so important.

However, to support the diagnosis you may require some tests, which can also be provided here at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

These may include:

DAT scan: This is used to detect dopamine loss in the brain, supporting a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease or parkinsonism.

MRI scan: The results of this scan are usually normal in early Parkinson’s disease but useful for ruling out other causes.

Comprehensive treatment options

Early-stage Parkinson’s care

A combination of medication and therapy can make a significant difference to patients. Most patients respond well to a drug called Levodopa, which is taken orally, often experiencing a significant improvement in movement and daily function.

Our team of expert neurotherapists is also on hand to support with maintaining physical strength and executive function skills.

Managing advanced Parkinson’s disease

Over time, oral medication may become less predictable. At The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, we offer advanced treatment options which may be unavailable in other UK centres. These can help to stabilise dopamine levels; reducing “off” periods and involuntary movements.

An integrated approach to Parkinson’s disease

Parkinson’s disease affects more than movement. Other commonly associated symptoms (such as anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance, and cognitive change) require equally careful management.

Our multidisciplinary team provides integrated support from:

  • Neuropsychologists

Between them, and with the support of your chosen consultant, they can provide personalised, long-term care that adapts as your needs change.

Specialists in rare and atypical Parkinsonism

As well as being internationally recognised experts in Parkinson’s disease, our consultants also have niche expertise in:

  • Atypical Parkinsonism

  • Genetic forms of Parkinson’s disease

  • Young-onset Parkinson’s

The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery has a worldwide reputation for its research into movement disorders, including clinical trials in Parkinson’s disease, PSP, and novel treatment options, meaning that you will be in one of the world’s most advanced and comprehensive centres for Parkinson’s care.
